Harwood Middle School Update, March 29, 2019

Harwood Union 8th Grade students showcase their learning at our evening
at the Celebration of Learning this past Thursday evening.

If you get a chance to stop by the school There are posters of the poems students recited line the walls of the gallery for your enjoyment.  Each poster is written in the student’s own handwriting, includes at least one picture or symbol to represent the poem, and a brief analysis, interpretation, and commentary on the poem. Bring your phone as some have a QR code
that allows you to hear the recitation of the poem by one of our 8th-grade poets.

Ms. Moore’s 8th grade science students participated in the annual HUMS 8th Grade Rube Goldberg competition, inspired by the 20th century political cartoonist who created and drew cartoons depicting complex devices that perform simple tasks in indirect and often convoluted ways.  In true Rube Goldberg fashion, students were asked to make a simple task much more complicated, testing their creativity and ingenuity. Materials were brought from home to construct the devices which were built at school over the course of this week in preparation for Thursday's showcase.

8th grade social studies students in Mrs. Ibson’s class created National History Day projects. The theme for the projects is “Triumph & Tragedy in History.” Students could chose any historical figure to research and represent in a final product.

HUUSD School District Survey:
What are YOUR 3 words?

The HUUSD Visioning Committee would like input from our communities on developing a vision for our district. By taking this short survey, you can help shape the vision that will guide decision-making at all levels in our schools.  The survey is available online at:  www.surveymonkey.com/r/HUUSD_VISION and we ask for your reply by Friday, April 12. One of the key questions in the survey may require some thought. It asks: “What are three words that represent your hopes for what our school district will be like in the next several years?”  We have provided a word cloud on the district website - as well as in the survey itself - in case you need help getting into a frame of mind to answer this question, but we encourage you to use your own words! Your responses to this survey will help us decide what topics to include in the vision conversations we plan to host this spring toward more concrete vision and goals statements. There will also be links to the survey on the school district main page (wwsu.org) as well as the HUUSD board page (wwsu.org/huusd-board), and hard copies can be filled out at the local town office or library in all six towns.

We look forward to hearing from you!
Respectfully,
The HUUSD Board

Harwood Middle School Update, March 8, 2019

Curious how to spell.......
HUMS SCRIPP’S SPELLING BEE

In February HUMS held its annual Scripps Spelling Bee School-wide competition.  The contest is open to all students in grades 7 & 8 and was held in classrooms this year.  After 7 rounds of competition, the field shrunk down to the final 3: eighth graders Piper Boudreau, Beckett Kahn, and David Rivera-Ollenburger.  Finals were held on Wednesday, March 6, and after many intense rounds with closely matched spellers, Beckett Kahn edged the competition and is the 2019 HUMS Scripp's Spelling Champion.

Beckett will go on to represent Harwood at the Vermont State Scripp’s Spelling Competition at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont on March 19, 2019.

POETRY SLAM WORKSHOP 2019

This week marked our official 8th Grade Poetry Unit kick-off with a Poetry Slam Workshop!   Vermont Poetry Slam Master Geof Hewitt conducted the workshop which culminated in an in-class  Poetry Slam competition with students. Geof is a poetry slam "guru" who conducts poetry slam functions around the state of Vermont, and who has several anthologies of his own poetic works as well.  He shared some of his original works during the slam. Geof has worked with HUMS to develop and refine the workshop over the years, and this year we are proud to announce that we had more participants in the in-class poetry slam than ever before!!!
