Dear Parents/Guardians:
Step UP Day provided your students with an opportunity to meet their teachers and become familiar with their 9th-grade-course schedule.
The high school master schedule is a complex process which is a work in progress that starts with Step UP Day and continues beyond the first day of school.
The master schedule is subject to revision until the beginning of school next year. Revisions may affect students schedules. Students will receive an updated schedule in August with the back to school packets.
Please know that Tara Cariano will be the school counselor for students who have McCormick/Stauss for Global Studies and Erin Dezell will be the school counselor for students who have Ibson/Shepler.
Please note we are not able to accommodate teacher or team requests. Requests to change electives are based on the availability of the course and there is an Add/Drop period the first five days of school.
If you have questions between now and the end of the school year, please continue to contact your student’s current school counselor.

| HUMS advocates recognize PRIDE Month The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the positive impact LGBT people have had in the world. |

HUMS band, chorus and jazz band took the main stage to dazzle the audience with musical pieces they have been rehearsing over the past few months. How Does It Work?
The Science Behind the Freeze
The secret to the creamy ice cream is all in the rapid freezing of the mixture. The liquid nitrogen causes the fat and the water particles to stay very small, giving the ice cream its creamy consistency. The goal is to avoid ice crystals – similar to what you get when you make ice milk. According to food science experts, rapid freezing preserves the nutrients in food (a quick-frozen vegetable that's three months old will likely have a nutrient composition closer to harvest levels than a five-day-old fresh vegetable. The faster you freeze, the less you destroy tissue structures that could lead to a more rapid loss).

| HUMS Connected with Nature! A Canadian Warbler decided to pay a visit to Ms. McCarty's English class today. The warbler decided not to use the door but instead went right through the screen on her window as they were reading a story about a bird's journey. The coincidence was uncanny. The Canadian Visitor did not have a visa for an extended stay, so after some photo ops she was gently left to go on her way. |

Curious about how to build a circle with Pringles? Easy... right? Not really.
HUMS engineers work together to build a ring using only Pringles chips. The Pringles Ringle is an engineering challenge in which students create a ring using only Pringles chips, no tape or glue allowed! The challenge requires a lot of patience as well as careful and precise chip placement. Although, the hardest part of the challenge is not eating all of the chips before finishing the ring.

| Curious what may be flying overhead? Is it a bird, perhaps a balloon, or some time of UFO??? Well, most likely the objects you see are one of our Radio-Controlled airplanes being flown middle school pilots who are members of our newly started flight club. The crew is open to anyone interested in hands-on building and operating flying machines. Recent grant funds will open up the opportunity for more piloted planes in the HU sky in the coming weeks. (Harwood may need a control tower soon) The group hopes to fly some Highlander Banners during home sporting events either later this spring or next fall. Keep your eyes wandering in the skies! |

“3 Word” Conversations......
BACKGROUND: These community conversations are the next step in our plan to develop a vision and goals for the HUUSD district. It follows the community-wide survey which closed on April 12 and received over 700 responses. We expect to publish results of the survey and conversations in June 2019, and develop a first draft of the vision/goals in time for the board retreat, which will occur sometime in August 2019. The hope is for the board to finalize the vision/goals in the Fall of 2019.

What’s happening with the Harwood bond?
Recognizing the need to present our community with a comprehensive Pre K through 12 plan for the school district, the Harwood Unified Union School District Board of Directors recently approved a timeline to outline our work from now until Town Meeting Day 2020. The goal is to present voters with a bond proposal that encompasses a Pre K through 12 plan for district configuration and construction needs on March 3, 2020. This bond will not only address the Harwood Union campus, but will incorporate changes and improvements for other facilities as necessary. On April 24, the board approved a list of “Challenges and Opportunities” as a first step in creating a plan.The timeline also includes several upcoming events. There will be a May 8, board discussion of draft criteria to use in evaluating potential Pre K through 12 models. And on May 15, the administration will present a report on current state/do nothing model projections for per pupil expenditure and homestead tax rates through FY 2029. Updates and outcomes will be shared through our regular HUUSD board meeting updates. On May 22, we will host a 90 minute forum at which community members can share their thoughts, ask questions, and have small group discussions regarding the work with members of the board and administration. At subsequent meetings, the board will outline and identify 3 - 5 scenarios for a Pre K through 12 plan, with a report in September 2019.
