Harwood Middle School Update, August 12, 2019

Welcome to the 2019 -20 school year.  We are very excited to learn and grow with our students this coming year.  The first day of the 19-20 school year, August 26, is days away.   The middle school staff has been meeting and planning this summer to make this year's educational experience exceptional!

We are planning an "Excellent "start to the new year which includes a surprise building unveil for our students that we have been working on throughout the summer.   We can't wait to show them their new space, which has not been upgraded since 1996.   To add to the substance of daily life at our school, the HUMS  staff completed a Responsive Classroom training this summer that places Connected student voice, the building of community, passion, Curiosity, and engagement at the center of all we do.

We can't wait to engage your children in learning opportunities both academically and socially.  In order to help with this, we will be asking all students to keep their personal devices in their school lockers for the entire school day.  Given our building upgrades, we also have larger lockers that have plenty of space for students to keep their backpacks/personal belongings in them as well.

See everyone soon!

How do we connect with the HUMS community?
1. Harwood Middle School's weekly Blog post.      This blog post is one of many that will be sent home on Fridays to keep you up to date on all of the inspiring, exciting and amazing learning opportunities your sons and daughters will encounter.    Beginning Friday, August 23th, the blog will include community announcements, calendar updates, and information you need to have for the start of the school year.  You can sign up to receive blog updates by placing your email address in the form to the right or click on the blog link on Friday afternoons.

2. Harwood Middle School Twitter Feed.  Harwood Middle's Twitter feed will be updated throughout the week with quick photos of students/staff working/learning together.  It is a great way to keep our larger community connected and curious about all that will take place this school year.  Our tweets can always be found on our blog for your review.

3.  Each grade team sends home via web a grade-specific newsletter.  This newsletter contains subject area updates, upcoming calendar events, announcements and information regarding how our students are being curious, connected and caring while at school.

4.  Harwood Union, as a 7-12 school, also sends out updates regarding school-related events, important information, and updates on their website and weekly Highlander Highlights.  This is hosted at the high-school level, but there are times when middle school information is found there as well.

Middle School Athletics.  The middle school athletics meeting for all Fall Sports will be held on Thursday, August 29th, at 5:30 in the High School Auditorium.  You can find more information regarding Middle School Activities/Athletics by clicking on here www.harwoodhighlanders.com or by connecting with Chris Langevin, our Activities and Athletic Director at clangevin@huusd.org.   An introductory letter about Harwood Athletics is available in the blog link cloud located at the top of the blog.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Have a great end to your summer!  The weather has been almost perfect.
