Harwood Middle School Update, August 30, 2019

HUMS First Day Welcome
to our
Caring, Connected and Curious learning Community
in our Awesome new Gallery Space!
We continue to be honored and excited to welcome our HUMS students to the new school year.   We look forward each day to strengthening the relationships that we have begun building with all of our excellent students and their families.  As it has been in previous years, we will continue our commitment to helping all students develop their intellectual capacity, academic skills, and social competence so that they will be prepared to effectively negotiate the demands associated with living in an ever-changing 21st century.  Beyond the rigors of their academic program, it is our aim to instill within each student the essential principles of pride, respect, and responsibility so that they will become productive and contributing members of our increasingly global society.
High expectations, which have been established by our fantastically dedicated staff, will be maintained while also providing a safe and nurturing student-centered community that fosters respect for individual differences.

We are also very excited about working with the active and involved parents that help to make HUMS a wonderful place for our students to learn and grow.  We look forward to doing whatever we can to support their efforts and encourage you to volunteer and participate at various social and academic events throughout the school year  So that you are informed, please check our weekly blog updates (typically Fridays) for the most up to date information about our school and all things HUMS. Be Curious, Be Caring, Be Connected, Be HUMS!

2019-20 UVM Teacher of the Year Awarded to our own Ms. McCarty

Congratulations Ms. McCarty.
Here is an excerpt from her nomination made by colleagues, students and community members:
"Ms. McCarty possesses the personal attributes necessary to engage students in learning opportunities that go beyond the traditional classroom. Her open mindset, collaborative approach, and student-centered focus continue to play a key role in the successful transformation of Harwood Union into a first-rate 21st-century school.  This successful skill set can be evidenced through the various initiatives she has led, which include supporting the publication of a student-authored newspaper, organizing and leading an annual experiential Ellis Island immigration program, directing and participating in a student-run assembly and band team and organizing and hosting an annual exhibition of learning celebration, which includes student voice through the recitation of their own poetry to a audience of our learning community.   Ms. McCarty’s professional approach places the learning emphasis on the individual in which each learner, student or adult, is responsible for his or her own progress."

Subject:  HUUSD Board Meeting Recap 9/28
Dear members of our six town community,
On August 28, 2019, the Harwood Unified Union School District (HUUSD) Board of Directors reconvened after the summer with a six-hour retreat to plan for the school year.
The board did the following work:
*Evaluated their progress on the previous school year’s goals and identified five goal areas for this year: PreK-12 Plan/Bond, budget, monitoring district performance, visioning and meeting operational obligations around policy, superintendent evaluation, contract negotiations, etc. Note: community engagement will be incorporated into each of the goal areas; visioning will be completed in the fall; monitoring will be started in the spring.
*Reviewed and discussed the initial draft of the HUUSD vision statement and identified allowing time for community input on the draft as the next step. (see link below)
*Agreed on two dates for community engagement and conversation around preK-12 redesign on October 1st (at Harwood) and October 7th (at Crossett Brook) from 7-9PM.
*Discussed operating protocols and the process for reviewing agenda items.

Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 11th at 6:00 pm in the Harwood Union School library. Please visit https://huusd.org/huusd-board to confirm time and place of meetings as start times and locations are subject to change. Also available are all board and committee agendas, meeting packets and minutes, and the link to board meeting videos. School Presentation during the day.

My son’s life story affects students like no other presentation. This true story inspires them to make positive changes in their lives to reduce bullying, cyberbullying and prevent teen suicides. Students are reached profoundly to examine themselves and how they treat others. Bystanders are inspired to no longer stand by and let others get bullied at school or online. An inspiring lesson about forgiveness is also imparted. All will leave this presentation feeling loved, hopeful and changed.
