"Are adults and educators providing students with what they need during this crisis?" Check out what CASEL has researched during the crisis in this power point https://casel.org/wp-content/
CAREGIVERS AND STUDENTS: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF:
1. Move. Our bodies need to move. They need to stretch, reach, twist, bend, step, sweat, to whatever degree works for our unique shapes and constitutions.
2. Nourish. Always wanted to make a dietary change, learn to meal prep, teach your kids to cook, or sample a new cuisine? Now’s the time! Structure one or two 30-minute chunks of cooking into your days
3. Connect. This one, more than ever, is key. Humans need to feel connected. We need to feel seen, heard, and understood by another human – and to extend the same in return.
4. Be. Amid all the “doing” – the preparing, protecting, adjusting, coping, responding, providing, procuring – humans need moments to simply BE.

Harwood Middle School Attendance
Reminder!
As mandated by the Vermont Agency of Education (AOE), every Vermont public school during this Remote Learning period must record attendance on a daily basis. We received notification of this mandate last Wednesday. In order to meet this requirement we developed a attendance process based on the guidelines put forth from the AOE, which included an immediate start of this process. To meet this requirement we initiated our Remote Attendance system without first informing our school families about how we would be completing this task. We apologize for any confusion or concern this caused and appreciate your patience as we strive to keep up with the pace of changes that come to us on a sometimes hourly basis. We hope the following description of our attendance process will help answer any questions you may have.
The Agency of Education defines attendance during this Remote Learning period as a student who connects with the school on a daily basis. If we can verify that a HUMS student connects with school by email, phone call, google classroom, an online sign in for a group or teacher meeting, assignment completion etc - the student is marked present by the school for that day. To be counted towards our required student day requirement of 175 days, the HUUSD district must have at least 51% of students present on any given day.
Liz Hepp, our wonderful administrative assistant will be our point person for all things to do with attendance. She will not be making phone calls or sending emails home if a student does not connect with the school, instead our HUMS admin/support team (Jen Dreimiller, Hillary Wheeler, Eric Larose, Mara Urban and Duane Pierson) will review daily attendance, look for trends of missed days and intervene when needed. Dr. Melody Frank will continue to act as our school’s truancy administrator during this time period.
If you have any questions please contact Duane Pierson at dpierson@huusd.org. Thank you for your continued patience as we develop and implement our Remote Learning system. |
HUMS COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:
8th GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES
STUDENT WINNERS AT
VERMONT HISTORY DAY CONTEST
Vermont History Day is an exciting education program that encourages students to develop research and critical thinking skills through project-based learning and the study of history. It also provides students the opportunity to share their projects at the annual state contest. Vermont History Day is affiliated with National History Day.
Each year, eighth graders in Mrs. Ibson's Social Studies classes participate in the project with coaching and lessons tailored to research practices and the presentation of the information. Students are supported in various aspects of the assembly and presentation of this in-depth research-based exploration.
Students conduct research online and in libraries, museums, and historical societies, and interview experts on their topic. Using evidence from primary sources, the students share their knowledge in the format of their choice: exhibits, websites, documentaries, performances or papers.
The entries are then judged by local historians, educators, and other professionals at the state contest. Through their work, students gain a deeper understanding of how people, cultures, and events affect the course of history.
The 2020 state contest took place last week as a virtual contest in response to the current situation. See the link below for additional information.
