"Important update on Lift up letter project for 7th grade"

Dear Parents & Guardians of HUMS 7th graders:

I hope this note finds you well. Not too long before remote learning began, I sent a message to parents about a SURPRISE project that I coordinate for 7th grade students every year: Lift up letters.

I have been giving this lots of thought about how to do this project remotely (or whether to postpone, etc.)  The teachers and I think that students could use a bit of extra encouragement/support as of now so we will keep this project for this year but move it to the very end of the school year (or beginning of summer).  I’ll mail students (with help!) the letters in a package explaining the project. Please take whatever health and safety precautions you would as with any mail when giving it to your child.

Previously, I encouraged hand written or mailed notes but since our world has changed dramatically, feel free to also email me your letters or have family members and friends email me. My email address is jdreimiller@huusd.org Please be sure the subject includes the student name and LIFT UP LETTER so it does not get lost in my inbox as I usually am compiling and sorting 300 or more letters. If you still want to mail your letter to the school, that is also fine. I will check my school mail once per week starting next week and be sure to follow instructions I have attached previously and below on the link.

Here is a link to my original message outlining my instructions for the project:  HUMS 2020 liftup letters

Please set a new deadline for yourself of June 8 to get the letters in. If you have too much going on and this project sounds overwhelming, I completely understand, just send me a note letting me know. Teachers and others write notes as well so your child will not be left out.

Thanks for participating!
Sincerely,

Jen Dreimiller

CAREGIVERS AND STUDENTS: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF:
The Greater Good Science Center shared Four Things To Do Every Day For Your Mental Health:
1. Move. Our bodies need to move. They need to stretch, reach, twist, bend, step, sweat, to whatever degree works for our unique shapes and constitutions.
2. Nourish.  Always wanted to make a dietary change, learn to meal prep, teach your kids to cook, or sample a new cuisine? Now’s the time! Structure one or two 30-minute chunks of cooking into your days
3. Connect. This one, more than ever, is key. Humans need to feel connected. We need to feel seen, heard, and understood by another human – and to extend the same in return.
4. Be. Amid all the “doing” – the preparing, protecting, adjusting, coping, responding, providing, procuring – humans need moments to simply BE.

Harwood Middle School Attendance
Reminder!
As mandated by the Vermont Agency of Education (AOE), every Vermont public school during this Remote Learning period must record attendance on a daily basis.  We received notification of this mandate last Wednesday. In order to meet this requirement we developed a attendance process based on the guidelines put forth from the AOE, which included an immediate start of this process.   To meet this requirement we initiated our Remote Attendance system without first informing our school families about how we would be completing this task. We apologize for any confusion or concern this caused and appreciate your patience as we strive to keep up with the pace of changes that come to  us on a sometimes hourly basis. We hope the following description of our attendance process will help answer any questions you may have.

The Agency of Education defines attendance during this Remote Learning period as a student who  connects with the school on a daily basis If we can verify that a HUMS student connects with school by email, phone call, google classroom, an online sign in for a group or teacher meeting, assignment completion etc - the student is marked present by the school for that day.   To be counted towards our required student day requirement of 175 days, the HUUSD district must have at least 51% of students present on any given day.

Liz Hepp, our wonderful administrative assistant will be our point person for all things to do with attendance.  She will not be making phone calls or sending emails home if a student does not connect with the school, instead our HUMS admin/support team (Jen Dreimiller, Hillary Wheeler, Eric Larose, Mara Urban and Duane Pierson) will review daily attendance, look for trends of missed days and intervene when needed.  Dr. Melody Frank will continue to act as our school’s truancy administrator during this time period.

If you have any questions please contact Duane Pierson at dpierson@huusd.org.  Thank you for your continued patience as we develop and implement our Remote Learning system.

Community Announcements
Please note that the opportunities/events listed below are not specifically endorsed or screened by school staff. As always, families should use their own standards and review processes to determine appropriate activities.

Vermont is participating in Graduate Together, the national celebration of America’s High School Class of 2020. The broadcast will take place 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2020 on ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, and stream online. There are ways for studentseducators and families to participate. After the broadcast Vermont will have a page with a message from Secretary French and stories from Vermont graduates.

GREEN UP VT  -- Many ways to support Green up!
Green Up Day Love Video Contest
Have a child who loves to be in front of the camera? Individuals or small teams (allowable by safe governance)  create their own Green Up Day 30 second commercial, or statement on what Green Up means to them, or how they participate in Green Up Day. Email the movie files to greenup@greenupvermont.org with a note that states the student name and grade, school name and teacher’s name. We will choose a statewide winner and with approval from all parties feature it on our social media channels. Your video could be next year's TV commercial! Prizes will be awarded.

Plogging for those who love to run!
Plogging is a Swedish activity (developed in 2016) that combines the act of picking up trash and jogging. Have kids with lots of energy or who would normally be running track, playing lacrosse, spring soccer, softball, baseball or any other sport this spring season try their luck at Plogging. Encourage teams to use the APP mentioned above  and reach out to other schools for a Plog-off. Just think of how many miles of VT roads we could get cleaned up and how FUN it would be. Encourage teams to log their miles and send them into this email greenup@greenupvermont.org and I will report the results in marathon fashion.
