Harwood Middle School Attendance Update
As mandated by the Vermont Agency of Education (AOE), every Vermont public school during this Remote Learning period must record attendance on a daily basis. We received notification of this mandate last Wednesday. In order to meet this requirement we developed a attendance process based on the guidelines put forth from the AOE, which included an immediate start of this process. To meet this requirement we initiated our Remote Attendance system without first informing our school families about how we would be completing this task. We apologize for any confusion or concern this caused and appreciate your patience as we strive to keep up with the pace of changes that come to us on a sometimes hourly basis. We hope the following description of our attendance process will help answer any questions you may have.
The Agency of Education defines attendance during this Remote Learning period as a student who connects with the school on a daily basis. If we can verify that a HUMS student connects with school by email, phone call, google classroom, an online sign in for a group or teacher meeting, assignment completion etc - the student is marked present by the school for that day. To be counted towards our required student day requirement of 175 days, the HUUSD district must have at least 51% of students present on any given day.
Liz Hepp, our wonderful administrative assistant will be our point person for all things to do with attendance. She will not be making phone calls or sending emails home if a student does not connect with the school, instead our HUMS admin/support team (Jen Dreimiller, Hillary Wheeler, Eric Larose, Mara Urban and Duane Pierson) will review daily attendance, look for trends of missed days and intervene when needed. Dr. Melody Frank will continue to act as our school’s truancy administrator during this time period.
